More than a Fashion Blogger

Edited by: Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista

Whatever your thoughts are about fashion bloggers, this week’s links a’la mode reads were quite evocative. Hardly does an article leave me questioning my own thoughts or ideals, especially when talking fashion. I may be moved to buy, but deeper? (sans any type of societal injustice) These bloggers brought more to the table, as Vogue Gone Rogue did with her declaration of the coexistence of feminism and fashion. Yet, I was proud to be an entrepreneur after glimpsing into the world of a bridal consultants leap into fashion design. In a world where a new fashion blog is born everyday and everyone is a critic. Confessions of a Fashion Editor interviews an outspoken blogger critic while Guacamole & Toast ponders if we should even care what others say. Whether you read because of the pretty pictures, fun reads, or fashion tips, know your authors are more than fashion bloggers.

  • A look into print master Erdem Moralioglu’s design process. Of his clothes:

Although Erdem has said in the past that he was “thrilled” to see Anna Wintour wear one to a gala in New York, today he’s more philosophical about the real effect of celebrity endorsement, asking: “Have you ever bought something because someone famous has worn it? No. I think that’s true across the board. Women buy things because they have an emotional response to it and they think it will look good.”

  • A must watch. Graphic designer Marian Bantjes talks about joy, imagination and curiosity in design:

17 Resources for Vancouver Fashion Grads

As a recent fashion school grad, I’ve been on the lookout and keeping up-to-date with what is going on in the industry in Vancouver as I’ve been settling down and figuring out what my next steps should be. (Don’t worry, I’ve figured it out, and will reveal soon!) Whether our goal is to find a job in the fashion industry, to set out on our own or to simply indulge in industry news, I think it is important to stay up to date and take advantage of all the resources we have. When we are informed, we stand a better chance of making change and impact in the competitive world of fashion!

Following are some of my favorite resources as well as new finds that I think are worth knowing for anyone trying to get into the fashion biz.

Vancouver:

  1. The Sheila Wong Fashion Design Studio is a newly open full service studio to meet the needs of apparel designers, including equipment and space.
  2. Spool of Thread is another new spot, this one focusing on providing the tools and space for sewing enthusiasts.
  3. I have to support The Kwantlen Fashion Blog. Aside from being my alma mater, it is a great resource for events and jobs.
  4. The Klo Fashion Marketing Blog has some great posts. What I love are their custom portfolio cases!
  5. Threads Gazette
  6. Vancouver Fashion Ezine

Canada:

  1. Toronto Fashion Incubator has great resources and tools for fashion entrepreneurs, including media and retailer lists.
  2. Apparel Connexion is growing, and have recently started up a business and HR tools section, with really great articles on how to start a business and marketing strategy.
  3. Style Nine to Five is a new career website for fashion professionals across Canada. Definitely better than trolling through Craigslist.
  4. The Just a thought column on Final Fashion is an insightful read from a more personal angle by Toronto-based fashion illustrator Danielle Meder.

Honourable Mentions:

  1. The Business of Fashion
  2. Racked National is “shopping and style intelligence”.
  3. Fashion Incubator: “lessons from the sustainable factory floor”.
  4. Looking for an internship in the fashion industry? Free Fashion Internships is the most comprehensive source.
  5. Kelly Cutrone offers her tips for a career in the fashion industry.
  6. No more access to trend forecasting? Trend Hunter is a trend spotting community.
  7. Twitter! Nothing beats filtering your own fashion news and bits from both consumers and businesses.

Links a la Mode: Fashion Blogger’s Delight

links a la mode

Edited by Jennine/IFB

After a small hiatus of Links à la Mode it was great to revisit all the wonderful links submitted to the community each week. As bloggers grow, so do concerns about growing pains. Sugar & Spice talks about bridging the gap between her online identity and real life one, Retro Chick ponders the pros and cons of niche blogging and Miss Vinyl Ahoy shares tips protecting your content with a Creative Commons license. But that’s not all… there are loads of interviews from Fasshionaburu meets Rachel Roy and M.I.S.S. interviews a vintage vixen for a stunning video (try saying that 3x). All a great mix, so grab a cuppa tea and enjoy!
